Our friend, Micaiah Hardison, urged us to watch a BBC documentary titled Why Beauty Matters. It is an excellent 52 minutes, and I applaud Roger Scruton for being bold enough to go against the mainstream thinking of art, architecture and music. Very strong opinions seep out of my mouth straight from my heart when art is being discussed. I'll spare you the passionate verbiage, except for this...I believe art is only art when it involves skill, taste, and creativity. Since the mid-20th century, art has been too loosely defined...beauty does matter.

Merry Christmas Dear Mel and Co
ReplyDeleteI'm very late with my christmas greetings this year.. so hope you and yours had a wonderful day...and that the lead up to 2012 is filled with fun.. and 'beauty'.. ciao ciao xxx Julie
Amen, sister. Beauty is central to my own conception of art. I talk about this often with my closest artist friends, and I will defend this position until I die. So much contemporary "art" and architecture leaves me feeling cold at best and degraded at worst. I think art should challenge and uplift us. Have you read Elaine Scarry's book, "On Beauty and Being Just"? I think you and Sean would love it. Thanks for sharing this link. Todd and I will watch it. xoxo
