Last year was my first attempt at gardening, a learning process to say the least, but we did enjoy lots of tomatoes, herbs, and a few cucumbers, figs, strawberries and beets. This year, I'm starting my research early, for I'm going to fill our plates and pantry with mother nature's home-grown edible gems.
While at the library, I checked out several issues of Organic Gardening {don't you just love all the brilliant resources offered FREE from the library?}. Along with my beloved copy of Sunset Magazine's Western Garden Book of Edibles , I'm plotting my planting and gathering of seeds.
The crumb is as anxious as I am to get this play-in-the-dirt party started, so the fava beans, brussel sprouts, english peas, and chard will find their happy home within the soil next week. Most likely, the research will unveil more delectables to add to the winter planting list.
And of course, I'll gladly take any green-thumb tips you wish to share?

I had success with beans, cucumbers, squash, tomatoes, peppers and loved my radishes too.
ReplyDeletehave fun with it!

Wishing you a plentiful harvest Mel ..... don't let me get my hands on the peas....ours don't ever get to the cooking pot because I eat them as I pick them !! haha
ReplyDeleteYour little crumb will love digging, sowing seeds, and then seeing everything grow. She is indeed her Mother's daughter. XXXX
Awesome! I have never gardened...I keep saying maybe next year! So I'll love watching YOUR garden grow! :)
ReplyDeleteMel I think it is so great!! As I am in a condo I don't garden as such anymore. However I think this spring I will plant an herb garden of pots!

I'll be happy to do any taste testing you require. :) I need to decide whether to attempt a garden again this year - as you know I'm not in an optimal growing region for veggies. Last year was a dismal failure.
ReplyDeletedo not skimp on high quality/rich soil. we didn't get low quality per se, but took the suggestion of someone else (at home depot) in terms of the soil that we chose. since we had to buy an incredible amount to fill our planter boxes, we were too quick to make the purchase (seeing that it was less expensive than others offered).
ReplyDeletewe are still (almost 2 years later) paying for that mistake!
we have incrementally added (based on lots of research and help from our new friend/garden guru at armstrongs) so many other nutrients (calcium, nitrogen, magnesium...), and are now (for the first time) composting, so we're hoping that our soil (this spring) will FINALLY be in good shape. There's lots of growth at the moment, so i can tell we're almost there!
i look forward to hearing more/sharing tips along the way :).
ooh fun...somehow I let spring and summer slip by last year without much time in the garden. I plan to change that this year! I can't wait to read about all of the fabulous dishes you'll make with your homegrown goodies. P.S. Love the packaging on those seeds.
ReplyDeleteYes, it feels good to get your hands in the dirt. Since the closing of my store I have had more time to get 're-involved' in our community. The first thing I have done is to become involved in our community organic garden. In is in its infancy, the garden as well as the organization, but I am sure it will grow and flourish. I hope to learn a lot along the way.

Mel,
ReplyDeleteI'm just as excited as you are! I received my Baker Creek heirloom seeds in the mail last week, and still have several seeds to plant (indoors). I'm hoping that by starting them indoors, I will be "ahead" of the game.
I guess we'll see!
Have fun with the garden planning!

ooohhh fun! i love to garden - even though i have to do it in pots on the porch. i have found some things do really well in a pot and some things just don't, green beans, tomatoes, lettuce, herbs, all do really well in a pot. i always like to mix in some flowers like a pot of zinnias to make it more colorful :)
ReplyDeletehappy gardening!
ps i'm a new follower - happy to have found you!
