taking time ~

She is growing up way too fast.  My little crumb is now a very independent 4-year-old, and I'm loving every moment of her.  My selfish urges have gone into overdrive, and I do not want to miss a moment of her sweet life.  She is my buddy 24/7.  We get each other {okay, maybe I get her much more than she gets my need for a coffee break, email time-out, or the general boring pesky grown-up stuff}, but in general we have fun. A lot of fun.

Just today, we discussed a favorite book in detail and why she loves it.  She then asked why I like to read it to her.  She's curious, she cares, and she can hold up her end of the conversation.  Good traits/skills I wish to foster and make sure she keeps forever and always.

Time is passing me by way too quickly.  If only I could stand still and just be.  Be free like her.  I guess what I really want is for my Gaia Miette to remember these early days with her mama.  Mostly, I want her to have fond memories with me.  Recollecting some of the joyous times like when I helped her plant the "frijoles", search for worms for her 'worm farm', hula-hoop blunders {that would be moi}, singing "someone's in the kitchen at Gaia's" until we are hoarse, and snuggling in the mid-afternoon because what she needs most is her mama.

I count my blessings to be able to spend 100% of my time with my one and only girl.  Believe me, we do without a lot to make this happen, but there is nothing I value more than my crumb's happiness.  So I'm going to treat this "full-time job" with the utmost respect and take a sabbatical from this space for a while.

She and I have a whole world of blossoms to explore, so we hope you will understand...

  1. Your dear little crumb is far more important than blogging Mel and you must treasure every moment you spend with her. In a blink of an eye they are gone, off to University, work or travel and a life of their own, so enjoy the magic that is your daughter. Have fun, all three of you. XXXX

  2. I love that you sing that! My family has a habit of inserting names into songs too. I will miss seeing you here, but I 10000% understand. Being present in your life is number one....and should be. Reaching out over the Internet comes second. And when you are ready to come back to this space, we will be here. Xoxo

  4. What a beautiful gift for your sweet little girl! My mother was not around as much when I was a child, but we make up for it now and that is a gift more precious than any other. Have a lovely day!

  8. This is SUCH an important time and you are so doing the right thing. We can create such wonderful memories for them - and simple memories are the most important. Enjoy this precious time as it flies too fast. My little crumb of yesterday, today is a sophisticated joy of 16 - and I am overcome with happiness when she recounts ( with great passion and expression ) an event, a taste, a smell or a journey from the past. 9. This post pulled at my heart. I've been reading your blog for quite a while now, and one of the things I've loved the most is your relationship with your little girl and the amazing bond you two have, which is evident even in your shortest posts. I just know she'll look back on her childhood one day and appreciate its magic and wonder, and, most of all, the person who fostered it all - you!

Cheers to you and your little one! Enjoy this sabbatical..I will be selfishly counting down the days until your return :)

  11. I can't wait to run into her in 10 years, and then in 20. She's already incredible and special and I can't wait to see where her talents and heart take her.

  20. You're doing a great thing for your little one! I think the sacrifices are well worth it! And yes the time goes by so incredibly fast; it's hard to believe my little girl is now in her second year of college. I miss her but know she's enjoying her independence. Keep cherishing the little moments and take lots of photos!

  25. It is the best life imaginable and I miss it so. As my youngest approached 7 and "do without" became more "without" than "with," I had to leave my four. But, I made a plan and after several years, this summer I'll be returning to them and my easel, living the life I've always dreamed. Things change and then we change things.

  26. Dearest Reverie! From one Mama to another: I so get you, coffee break and all! Believe me, it does not change and as I see my grown boys (24,21) and my 15 year old daughter and son (12) bound through life and always need time to cuddle with me. (yes, still) I enjoy these years and like you I want to remember for them, since they are still at an age where the next thing ahead is the one desired. Looking back comes later in life. So, I feel we are responsible to have the memories preserved. Maybe not the memories, that's what they will have on their own, but the large and small events, filling their lives now. And to collect the little mementos and some of their writings, and little shoes and dresses....YES!

  30. Ooooh...look at that luscious picture!! THese are certainly the moments to remember - I try not to get too sappy about it when I think of how short these early years are, the times when we are able to hold them so closely, when there is no one else in the world that they love more than us. I know it's passing quickly, but I try to squeeze my eyes shut and force myself to stay in the moment. xo

  31. I don't begrudge you one second of that precious time. Sweetpea is already forgetting a lot of the moments we spent together before school took over her little world, and it's making me realize I need to MAKE that time too, right now, while she still loves spending time with me.
    Enjoy, my friend!

  34. Mel, This post brought tears to my eyes. It makes me so happy to see how much love she pours in her sweet Momas heart and I know you fill hers everyday. This post reminds me of my mom and I. It feels like just yesterday I was sitting in the grass curious about a flower with my mom right there next to me. Every day is only going to get better and better with Gaia by your side and you by hers. I love you both and thank you for sharing the simple yet big things in life like this post.

    XO Noel

  39. Mel,

I've been thinking about you lately and decided to visit your blog.
If only more mothers felt the way you feel about raising their daughters and spending quality time with them.
Gaia is so blessed to have you as a mama.
Funny thing, we just named one of Amelia's chicks, Dinah, in honor of the song "Someone's in the kitchen with Dinah"...funny how little things in our lives (you and me) unknowingly collide.

Oh, I also found a repellent for caterpillars. It's called Dipel Dust. It's supposed to be completely safe (I've done quite a bit of research). You may look into it if you have any caterpillar problems.

I hope you, Gaia, and Mister Reverie are enjoying your sabbatical!
    Miss you,

    Mandy

  42. I really resonated with this post. It was sweet to read some particulars of your close relationship with your daughter, and think about how my daughter and I are on the track to have similar experiences as she ages. She's 20 months and we are co-explorers of the world, enjoying the beauty and the pains of it together. Anyway, thanks for sharing your experience, it was lovely and affirming to read. Take Care, Rhea
