All it takes is a vision, a group of like-minded people who put their thoughts, ideas, and plans of change into action. A movement has started in the U.S. ~ one that not only benefits the environment but also improves health and socialization. Europeans have proven this brilliant concept equates to a more civilized society, and now we are finally taking note.
PUBLIC bikes is Rob Forbes' (founder of Design Within Reach) newest venture, and this design based business is on "a mission to help us reduce our dependency on cars and think more intelligently and artfully about the way we get around and connect with our cities and communities".
I don't know about you, but this is one bandwagon I'm going to jump on ~ and yes, I've already picked out my PUBLIC M8 beauty (in Cream, please) and have added it to the top of my wish list.
It sounds fantastic, and those retro-styled bikes are just beautiful. I usually take public transportation (even though the SF MUNI can be horrifically slow sometimes).
ReplyDeleteThis is fantastic! I think bikes should definitely be more accessible to people! (and I like the powder blue one! Wouldn't we be cute together out for a bike ride?)
ReplyDeleteFabulous vision, love your choice and that Peterboro Basket would look great on it!

I love that this is coming to the States! I think that anything that is great for the enviroment as well as our health is fantastic! I love the Blue!! What a fabulous post.

ReplyDeleteoh wow! it is 'public' listed on my wish list as well. beautiful and good for every one :)
ReplyDeletei love this, kudos! i have a happy yellow bike and i absolutely love riding it. and i feel so good knowing it isn't harming our environment. :)
ReplyDeleteGeorgeus retro bikes!! Everyone has at least one bike in Denmark - they are every where..lol.. I love it :-)
ReplyDeleteLove these bikes! Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteI'm all over this! I use my new bike a lot! And when I must go a bit too far, I use my scooter. The bike is great exercise too-which is an added benefit. I love your pick ~ she's a beauty. Mine is a creamy yellow-like butter!
ReplyDeleteThis is such a lovely, fun idea -- I hope it takes off. For those areas designed to be conducive to biking about, it is a fabulous idea! Fun!

here! here!!
ReplyDeletei read about this and had such community envy (remember i'm down here behind the wretched orange curtain).
i love riding my cruiser around town. nothing like a little wind in your hair to get you feeling 10 again.
on another note....."await your reply" (the novel i'm reading).......i have no idea how it is?!?!?! the kindle says i'm 29% of the way through, but i couldn't tell you ANYTHING about this book. yet, it's strangely compelling. i have a feeling its randomness will start to organize into something yummy....i will keep you updated.
xo,
katie
How I would love one with a Nantucket basket on the front for my trips to the market.
ReplyDeleteJo
Love this idea...love it!!!! I try to live by this as I adore my sweet bike and try to jump on her when I can. xoxox
ReplyDeleteI LOVE riding my bike; however, where I live there are very few places where it is safe to ride...I would be thrilled if this were a new way of life. How exciting!
ReplyDeletePerhaps when our little ones are older they will look back and think cars are for lazy people (Ha!)
Mandy
Ooh that bike in Chartreuse is simply lovely!
ReplyDeleteOoh I'd have a hard time choosing between orange and powder blue. One of each, please!
ReplyDeleteOn vacation in Amsterdam a few years ago we were struck by how EVERYONE there rode bikes, and wished we could live somewhere like that. Maybe this movement will make that dream a bit closer to reality! Great post Mel!
I really love this idea, and so wish it was easier for us to ride our bikes around, to many busy streets, etc, perhaps that means we need to move! :) love the photo as well...happy wednesday!
ReplyDeleteIt's hard here in Los Angeles to ride a bike and not fear for your life. But these are so beautiful one might just give them a try.
ReplyDeletethat was one of my favorite things abour Paris...the bikes.
ReplyDeleteAnd even though the streets are so overcrowded with vehicles..they work so nice side by side with the bicyclists.
love it.
xo
I'm right beside you! I LOVE this idea and one cream for me too please! I have the perfect basket from a Paris Hotel for it:) I'm sorry if I confused you with my long and crazy email....

ReplyDeletegreat cause but i think i'll stick to my highlander. haha. i'm such a brat!
ReplyDeletethough that orange one above is really tempting me...
Mel they are fabulous, so adorable. I lived on my bike when I was young. Now I live way out in the country but can still ride mine to the park, etc. I would love one of these cuties!
ReplyDeleteGreat post
xoxo
The sight of these bikes actually just gave me chills! What a great cause.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting about these great bikes. The style is right up my ally. My husband is a huge cycling fan. He logs in about 120 miles per week & cycles to work each day and for enjoyment on the weekends with a race team. He knows he can't get me out with his group but I could definitely see me puddering around in one of these beauties.
ReplyDeleteThank you Mel ~
How wonderful! Such a great way to get around when you live in a city or small town!
ReplyDeletethanks for the head's up on this. it's an importance cause no doubt about it.
ReplyDeleteI am so, so loving this post. I adore my bike and all bikes (just look at my header!), and I am thrilled to be moving in just two weeks to a neighborhood in Portland, ME, where my husband and I can bike or walk to almost everything we love: the beach, coffee shops, the island ferry, bookstores, the farmer's market, tennis, the museum, the library--we are happy, happy campers!
ReplyDeleteHere's to a greener, leaner U.S.!
