Sorolla: Visions of Spain

Today, we attended the Sorolla Exhibition at the Museo Nacional del Prado. Joaquín Sorolla, an early 20th Century Master painter of portraits and landscapes, is receiving well-deserved attention in one of the most important ever organized exhibitions, in Spain and abroad, with regard to the number of works and their quality. The exhibition includes around one hundred paintings by Sorolla, the most internationally known Spanish artist of his day, and provides a comprehensive collection of paintings based on examples of his finest works and the fourteen panels (murals) known as the Vision of Spain painted for The Hispanic Society of America. Being able to behold so many of Sorolla's masterpieces, in the Prado, has been the perfect prelude to our week in Madrid.

  2. I just love Madrid. It is such a beautiful city. I hardly remember the Prado museum as Madrid was the last destination city of one and a half week France and Spain tour, and I was so fatigued. But I do remember the botanical gardens in Madrid. They are a must see. A nice place to slow down and relax!

  3. Oh, yeah, you probably already know about this, but Madrid has a HUGE flea market on Saturdays. (I cannot remember the name of it.)You can find wonderful European antiques at a fraction of the cost compared to the Clignancourt flea in Paris. I found a marvelous Spanish loving cup for 10 euros and I about fainted when the man told me the price! Let's just say, that I've never shuffled through my euro stash of bills any faster!

  4. Mandy,
Thank you for all the great Madrid tips! We will be sure to check out the botanical gardens, and I hope to have a few minutes of flea market time on Saturday before our train ride to Andalusia!

  8. The exhibition sounds amazing, and I love this painting! I especially admire his use of turquoise as an accent to the white on the dancers' dresses. It brings your eye right in to focus on their movements. Can't wait to hear more about your adventures!
